In principle is a little more difficult than WordPress. Difficult is when you have to configure a newly installed extension and you need to read Theory in order to set correct parameters, or more difficult is when you have to migrate from one version to another, like from Joomla 1.5 to Joomla 3 or to Joomla 4
What’s something difficult you find in any content management system?
In reality, Joomla can be far easier that working with WordPress. Admittedly, I have over 15 years experience with Joomla - preferring it in every way over WP - and spend a fair amount of time working to educate Joomla users globally.
Mapping out the glossary of synonyms, you quickly can see where the base functionality is similar across both platforms… but then quickly you can find Joomla has a lot more functionality build into it “out of the box” than Wordpress, and many functions that you would need a WP plugin installed to be able to access that functionality.
Though there’s still extensions (what WP call plugins) you can install to extend Joomla, typically Joomla requires minimal extra coding knowledge, though you can easily do much more if you want to code. Regularly I build sites in Joomla with only a need to know the Joomla interface, and typically the only file I need to update externally is the custom.css file to style the site - and even that can be managed inside the Joomla administrator area.
If you’re switching from another system, as always learning a new system is going to be difficult. Support is available via Joomla! Forum - community, help and support - Index page and Joomla Stack Exchange or if you’re lucky, you may have a Joomla! User Group close by - Look at the Directory to find your closest group.
If you’ve not got a Joomla site that needs migrating, then that isn’t a factor… and shouldn’t be one - Joomla 1.5 and 2.5 reached EOL years ago. Joomla 4 is in RC mode at the moment, with a concentration on making the migration process as simple as possible going forward, but Joomla 3 is still able to be supported for 2+ years after 4 is released as a stable version.
